Solid and engineered hardwood

Traditionally, hardwood floors have been made of solid planks of domestic species like oak, walnut, maple and cherry or exotic species like mahogany, rosewood, ipéand acacia. This flooring comes unfinished or prefinished. Unfinished flooring is installed before staining and finishing with the homeowner’s method of choice –polyurethanes, wax or oil. It can take over a week before a freshly finished floor can be used. Prefinished hardwood is ready to use immediately. Solid hardwood is in the upper range of most budget but rewards homeowners with years of satisfaction and strong value when it comes time to sell.

Engineered hardwood has a substantial veneer of hardwood, with a multi-layer backing that stabilizes the flooring. Available in the same range of species as solid hardwood, engineered planks can be used in kitchens and below-grade due to their ability to withstand a degree of moisture. It is only available prefinished.

Depending on their manufacturers’ guidelines, solid and most engineered hardwoods can be refinished. If taken care of, solid hardwoods can be periodically refinished and last a lifetime. Engineered hardwoods tolerate one or two refinishings with some of these floors are warrantied for over 20 years!
